Council Member Adams was pleased to be a part of Metro’s groundbreaking of two new lines to serve the City of Houston. These new light rail lines will connect the north and southeast parts of the city with downtown Houston.
The southeast corridor will start at Griggs Road at Long Drive and the north corridor will start at Northline Mall. Both will run into downtown Houston.
Under President Barack Obama’s new budget, five light rail projects were selected nationwide to receive federal grant money. The two new METRORail lines are two of those projects. The north corridor and the southeast corridor will receive $150 million combined. Traveling from the nation’s capital to the Bayou City to participate in the festivities were U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Congressman Gene Green, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Congressman Al Green. Metro is adding 14 miles of light rail to METRO’s existing Main Street Red Line. METRO’s light-rail expansion project will better connect communities and residents to jobs, health care centers, universities and more. Officials estimated that the project will create 60,000 jobs.
We are more than excited to welcome these new projects to the City of Houston. Our constituents in District D will benefit greatly from these new developments, via commerce, and mobility. We are excited to help get Houston moving. Metro estimates that by 2030 about 129,000 people will be using Metro light rail.

CITIZENS BETTERING HOUSTON – HEARTS & HAMMERS
The Hearts and Hammers Program is a Community Outreach Project – “Inspired by God; Managed by Endtime Movement Ministry Church and Supporting Organizations, hoping to service in the area of well need home repairs to qualifying neighbors in our communities.
They have plans to do repairs to at least one home each month starting on August 1st, 2009 and continuing on the first of the month thereafter. Their hearts desire is to make a difference in their community. They fulfill their objective by using hammers to restore, revive, and preserve their community.
These services cannot be provided to the community without the help of volunteers and donations. The Endtime Movement Church and Supporting Organizations would like to solicit your help. We would also like to encourage all trade men (construction, plumbing, electrician, etc) to join us.

HOUSTON ROSE SOCIETY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY
You would be shocked to know Houston has the largest Rose Society in the Nation. Earlier this month, many joined the Houston Rose Society to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that incredible organization’s founding. William C. (Bill) Welch (one of the nation’s best known rosarians) gave one of his not-to-be-missed talks following a Rose Day Proclamation, presented to Houston Rose Society President Donald Burger by Houston City Councilwoman Wanda Adams.
The Houston Rose Society is the largest local rose society in the United States, with approaching two thousand members. It is a chapter within the parent organization American Rose Society.
Members of the American Rose Society encompass all levels of experience with roses and are committed to promoting the rose in all its diversity. If there’s one thing that all American Rose Society members have in common, it’s a love of roses.
